What is a Fissure
Fissure is a medical term with different meanings; in dentistry, it describes a groove in a tooth, the anatomic landmark where the enamel folds inwards. Like mountains, teeth have humps and valleys. In these depressions dental caries can develop and flourish. If you have very narrow fissures, you will be more vulnerable to caries than a person with "normal" fissures. Ask your dentist to examine the fissures and if necessary seal them with a special material to avoid future cavities in these areas. Learn more about this topic in the video "fissure sealing".
