Internal sinus lift is as a special surgical technique used for bone augmentation of the upper jaw, more precisely in the area of your molars and premolars. In medical language, this dental procedure is known as maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure, or informally, sinus lift or sinus procedure. Many patients loose their teeth at a very early stage or suffer from severe periodontitis, which causes the recession of bone structure. Once teeth are gone for a long time, the bone begins to be absorbed back into the body. So in many cases, there is not enough bone left to support implants. However, both the quality and the quantity of the existing jawbone are crucial for successful implantation. Nowadays, numerous surgical techniques exist for augmenting jawbones in a gentle and painless manner, the sinus lift being one of them. In Dentistry you distinguish between internal and external sinus lift. The internal sinus lift is particularly suitable if just a few teeth need to be replaced. The external sinus lift is particularly suitable if a number of teeth need to be replaced and there is very little bone left to work with. In this video, you can see how this dental procedure is performed on a real patient. Please watch the animated version if you should have a weak stomach.
