Pivot forming
The term pivot forming refers to the transfer of data from the afflicted tooth so that the dental technician can produce the corresponding pivot for it. Sometimes, in cases extreme tooth decay due to cavities, the treatment of the crown through dental crown imprint is no longer possible as there is not enough tooth material left to affix the crown securely. In such cases, the only solution left is pivot tooth forming, in which first a pivot imprint is taken, by filling up the root canal and then hollowing it up to allow the insertion of a root pivot. The taking of a pivot tooth imprint is a delicate task and substitutes for crown imprint in cases where there is no way to securely place the crown on the decayed tooth. The procedure of taking a pivot imprint and forming a hollowed up tooth is known as pivot forming and is only performed for custom made pivots. Custom made pivots are made of steel and cemented into the hollowed up tooth. As such, they are the cause of root fractures as well. Because of this, custom made pivots are slowly going out of circulation and are being replaced by pre-fabricated fibre glass pivots, which are glued in to the hollowed up tooth.
