Enamel Stripping
(2970 Views)
The process of removing enamel between the teeth is commonly known as tooth stripping or simply stripping in dentistry. This process of stripping enamel is also known as A proximal Enamel Reduction or A.E.R by physicians. There are many reasons to go in for teeth stripping or stripping enamel. For example, in a case of malocclusions, a slight lack of space can be corrected by removing enamel through tooth stripping, which positively improves the shape of the tooth, so that tooth movement is accelerated within the course of dental treatment with a retainer. In teeth stripping, polishing strips or mechanically driven polishing discs are used in removing enamel. It is advised to start the tooth stripping with very rough polishing elements for maximum stripping of enamel and minimum heat production due to friction. However, this should be immediately followed up by tooth stripping with a very polishing element to smoothen out the surface of the tooth. This is important because roughly hewn tooth surfaces are prone to bacterial attacks, which eventually leads to severe cavities. The process of removing enamel or stripping enamel may sometimes result in caries, which is why very little stripping should be carried out and that too after considerable thought. Excessive teeth stripping can also lead to inappropriate bone space, leading to recession of the bone, bleeding of the gum, loosening of the tooth and eventual loss.
