Color key
In dentistry, the color key or color scale is used to determine the color of your teeth. When considering dental crowns, veneers or dentures, it is of upmost importance to select the correct color to match your natural teeth and avoid a fake or artificial look. Teeth are not monochromatic; they are composed of many colors that should be taken into consideration when designing a dental replacement. This variation of shades is key to a natural look. The reflections of light and the texture of the surface on the porcelain in the restoration help creating a natural looking smile full of vitality. With the aid of the color scale, also called color key, the dentist forwards the appropriate color match to the technician, who manufactures for instance a new denture. The best results are achieved when the dental technician examines the patient personally, preferably at the location where the actual crown will be produced. It is also important for the ceramist to have information about the initial condition of the mouth as well as facial and tooth shape. Watch this video to find out more about tooth colors!
