Cold Test
A cold test is an examination method in dentistry that enables your dentist to determine your teeth's sensitivity and vitality. You also call it sensitivity test or vitality test, whereby the term vitality test is less misleading, since a not sensitive tooth doesn’t necessarily need to be dead. With the help of these tests, your dentist can measure the state of responsiveness of your teeth to external influences. A good site for cold application is on the transition area between a tooth crown and tooth. Please note that a cold spray should not be aimed directly at your teeth because this could cause harm. In this video you can see how the dentist uses the cold spray to ice off a piece of cotton; this piece of cotton is then held on the tooth while the dentist awaits your reaction. Using this method no harm can be done to your teeth. Please watch the video to see how the cold test is used.

Sounds like it can hurt. My teeth have been getting more and more sensitive as time goes on.
