I had my upper wisdom tooth extracted about 2 weeks ago. I had a dry socket and it was packed with gel. It been healing well for a about a week. The past 10 days their is a gurgle noise that goes to my ear and if I rinse my mouth with water and build up a little pressure the water comes out my nose then my ear hurts. I have been on cipro for tens days. My dentists says it will heal in a month or so, on the X-rays we did not see any hole in the sinus. Not sure what to do next.

your situation sounds like an oro antral communication, ie a small hole through the extraction socket to the maxillary sinus. some cases do develop a asmall communication which heal on its own. large obvious ones need repair flaps and suturing. in your case there was loss of blood clot, definitely a hindrance to healing. and small openings may not be seen in routine x rays.

what can be done in your case is continue the anti biotics, use nasal decongestants as well. stop the maneuver of holding water and increasing pressure. this will only help to maintain the patency of the communication. also avoid sipping , whistling, using straw, blowing baloons, and all activities that would increase air water pressure inside the mouth. if the maxillary sinus gets inflamed, the healing chances are much reduced.
if your symptoms are not improved in 2 wks , do consult your dentist and rule out the situation called oro antral fistula, which if develops will need a minor surgical closure.

Is it normal to feel those effects after a wisdom tooth extraction? I think I need to have an impacted wisdom tooth extracted, but I am a bit scared to have it done. I read a blog post on the This is Dentistry site that said the dry socket problem is really painful; and now yukii007 has these problems after the extraction (hope his/her situation has improved since the time the concern was posted, though...).
