I noticed that my gum is painful and have white color in one place in my mouth, other my gums are pink. What does it mean?

I noticed that my gum is painful and have white color in one place in my mouth, other my gums are pink. What does it mean?

Could mean there is pus drainage from a root underneath; it could also mean there is an aphthous ulcer on the gum. Those are the first two possibilities that come to mind. It will take a dental appointment to come up with a certain diagnosis.
