Hi there!

I have a gum disease and I have been getting deep cleaning treatment for a year now. My periodontist recommended that I should get a gum flap surgery to reduce the pocket depths around my back teeth. This will improve the condtion of my gums as well. I am scrared about this. Can you please post your experiences here! Thanks!

Hi Florante!

Gum flap surgery is done to treat a periodontal gum disease in which the infection reaches beneath the gum line. The oral surgeon will give you a local anesthesia before the procedure so you won't feel anything. When he is done cleaning, repairing and restructuring the teeth, he will seal the incision with dental sutures. The sutures will be removed a week after the surgery. You will be given antibiotics and pain medications.

It's a painless procedure you should not be worried about:-)

Before the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. During the procedure, the surgeon fold the gum back to form a flap to expose the root of the tooth . He will then remove the infected tissue below and between the teeth. A tooth scaling and tooth planning will follow to remove plaque below the gum line. After the surgery, the gums will be put back in place using stitches.
