What is true?

Hi everyone

I have always heard that braces widen your archs. I have also read in many Orthodontic research material that braces actually enhance the maxilla to its proper genetic potential in the first phase of the orthodontic treatement.
On the contrary, my Ortho says that he is actually pushing my front maxillary teeth inwards, though i must mention that i am JUST wearing ordinary braces with no elastics or any other appliance. Moreover, my lower teeth have come forward. Additionally, i never saw any drastic change until i got my lower braces on, which started to move my lower teeth outwards.
So if braces can movve the lower teeth outwards, why cant they move the upper teeth outwards as well, which would corroborate with the information in the orthodontic research material?
Which one is true?
1)They move ur teeth outwards?
2)they move ur teeth inwards?

Braces can only move teeth within the bone. Up to age 17 or thereabouts, palatal expanders can actually increase the width of the maxilla.

Unlocking a closed bite may ALLOW the lower jaw to grow to its full potential, but the braces do not cause the growth.

Thank you very much Doctor :)
But how do we "unlock" the closed bite?
