Unremoved temporary crown, is it bad?

Hi everyone!

I had a temporary crown put on one of my molars about a few months ago. Since I did not feel any pain then, I did not go back to the dentist to have it replaced with a permanent crown. My question is, is it dangerous to leave a temporary crown on tooth for a long time? It is not hurting anyway so I am thinking to just leave it there.

Please advice me! Thanks!

Dear Eyecatcher!

Yes it is! A temporary crown as it is called is not made to last long. It is not durable so it can allow bacteria to fill in which causes tooth decay.Once it comes off, you will feel painful sensitivity. I recommend having it removed before it can cause more issues.

Dear Eyecather,

The cement for the temporary crown is very weak, it can come off easily and when it does, the covered tooth will be exposed. When it is exposed, it can be damaged easily which may even lead to the need of a root canal treatment. It is a must to have the temporary crown replaced with the permanent crown.

Hello!

I would have the treatment finished. Even though you may not have any problems now, the temporary crown will eventually come off and may cause you more problems.

Temporary crown is made to be just "temporary". It sometimes has leak which allows bacteria to get under the crown. When bacteria set it, they cause more trouble which could lead to the extraction of the tooth.
