Tounge cleaning

So, I was told that I should brush my tongue too when I brush my teeth to get rid of bad breath. I have tried this but I gag horribly. I don't think I have bad breath but I see some light colored areas on top of my tongue especially at the far back near the throat, which could indicate bacterial growth. Can you recommend of any other ways to clean my tongue? Many thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much about brushing the tongue. It's true that it contains tiny fissures and groves that could retain some food debris but with regular brushing twice a day without rinsing I don't think it should be a problem. Beside there aren't guidelines regarding tongue brushing in UK.
If you wish u can use gentle tongue scrapers instead of brushing if that helps in reducing the gaging. Generally, if u try to put something far back on the tongue u still gonna gag. If this is still bothering u try to gargle with water to clean up those areas.

Do not stick the brush too far back. Use a very soft bristled brush to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth as well or you can get a special tongue cleaner.

If you have a very strong gag reflex, try using an inverted spoon as tongue scraper. It works best for me.:-D
