Tooth extraction with swollen gums

Hi Doc!

I am scheduled for a molar and wisdom tooth extraction next week. But my gum is swollen and painful due to abscess in my molar. Will they pull the teeth out or do I have to let the swelling subside first?

Your answers are greatly appreciated!

Hi Reinald!

You seem to have an infection. You have to clear the infection first with antibiotics before you can go on with the extraction. My dentist postponed pulling my tooth out because I had an abscess. He said the anesthesia will not be as effective with an infection. Inform your dentist about it so he can tell you what to do.

Dear Reinald, lovemon is right.

First you should tackle the infection, either with antibiotics, or if there is an abscess, with an inner incision.

As soon as the symptoms of infection are treated, it is time to extract the tooth!

Thanks a lot for your answers! I am currently on antibiotics. I'll be finished in two days then my dentist will take a look if we can proceed with the extraction.
