Tooth Abscess

Last Friday I had an infected tooth removed. Two days prior to having the tooth removed I developed a large swollen area on my lower jaw. the dentist removed the tooth and drained some of the infection from under the tooth inside my mouth. The dentist told me there was nothing she could do for the abscess located on my jaw that it would have to be drained from the outside of my mouth. She has referred me to an oral surgeon for a consultation. So my question is will an oral surgeon lance and drain the abscess even though it is not located in my mouth? I called my doctor and explained about the abscess but I was told to follow the advice of my dentist. I have an appointment with the oral surgeon on Wednesday. I took a week of Augmentin but it did nothing for the abscess. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the offending tooth was the one causing the infection, it should have drained when the tooth was removed. LYMPH NODE SWELLING, if any, will take longer to resolve. Lymph nodes are UNDER the lower jaw, and on the neck.

If all swelling does not resolve in a little over a week, you should investigate whether there is another source for the infection.
