Temporary cap broke off

User Level:
Patient

Hi,five months ago, I had a root canal treatment done on a rear molar and up to this time, the tooth is still sensitive. It feels like a root was exposed. The dentist suggested capping the tooth. I agreed and had the procedure done. After two days, the temporary cap broke off. I did not use that tooth for chewing and didn’t eat anything hard so I was really wondering why the cap broke off easily. What should I do? Should I request for a post to make the tooth stronger? The dentist did not mention about it but I’ve read in this board that a post and a crown would be great. I would love to hear some of your thoughts about this matter. Thank you.

No root canal tooth is sensitive because of the lack of a temporary crown. The problem probably lies with the root canal, or possibly strange night grinding habits you are not aware of. That might explain the temporary fracture.

Also possible is a fracture in the root. This is a very difficult problem to diagnose.
