Swollen gums around one tooth

So around 3 days ago after I ate some beef jerky, First time eating it, after I was finished the gum around the tooth I had been chewing it on mostly was extremely sore and causing a lot of pain and the gum around the tooth is slightly swollen and a bright red. could this have happened from eating the jerky? its been like this for 3 days now and its starting to cause problems for daily life due to it being painful.

This tooth had a temp filling in it and was going to be given a 'root canal' if I remember right.
the tooth also has a crack that is open to the nerves, but the temp filling protected, but while I was flossing the filling totally popped out...
The tooth itself isnt sore at all, I recall the dentist saying they were doing some work on it to get rid of most of the pain until they can do a full treatment on it.

I have a appointment in two weeks to go back for the treatment but I dont know If I can wait that long since the pain of my gums are killing me!
Will the pain subside? I've been taking painkillers and its helped a lot, it seems to be getting a little bit less painful.
is there anything I can do to ease the pain until my appointment?

Thanks
~Jack

Quite probably the tooth fractured under the gums. Every time you eat the sharp tooth edge is digging into the gum. Depending on where the fracture is underneath the gums, you may or may not be able to save the tooth. At the very least, you will probably need gum surgery, in addition to a root canal and crown.
