Swollen gum over last molar after gash on gum.

I had my wisdom teeth (all 4 of them because they were impacted) removed 7 years ago. I've have had no problems but last week there was suddenly a huge gash on my right lower gum where my wisdom tooth used to be. I didn't worry, figuring it would heal in a couple days, but then it started getting swollen. Again, didn't worry too much, but I woke up this morning and now the swollen gum is overlapping my last molar. It's now very very painful. What is it? Should I be worried? Should I contact my dentist or will it heal by itself?

I would certainly get in to your dentist and have it evaluated. You probably have an infection in the gums behind your tooth. The dental term is pericornitis. There may be a foreign object "caught" below the gumline causing it. Or sometimes it can just be a build up of the bacterial plaque that then turns into an abscess.
