Spacers

Greetings!

I will be having my braces on in two weeks from now. My dentist said, I need to have spacers first and I will be getting them on Saturday. I am wondering what are they for. Is it a must to have them before wearing braces? Will it hurt while they put them on and while I am having them?

Please post your experiences.

Thanks a lot!

Hello Bonzai,

Spacers are placed between top and bottom molars for about one to two weeks to slowly move the teeth apart until they are far enough for the dentist to fit in the brace. There is no pain when spacers are applied but they can cause pressure against the teeth. I began to feel the pain after 24 hours of having them but I managed it with painkillers.

Hi Bonzai!

The orthodontist will require you to wear spacers if there is no enough space between your teeth for the bands to fit in. You will wear them for more or less two weeks.

My teeth are very close together so before I had my braces on, I did get spacers first. They were little tiny bands put in between teeth to move them apart a little for the braces to fit in. Spacers do not hurt at all.
