Sore and red gums near a filling

About nine months ago, I had a large silver filing placed on tooth # 30. Since then, I have had pain in the gum around this tooth. About a month ago, I had a root canal done on this tooth. Now, the gum near the filling is already red and tooth #30 and the teeth beside it are hurting. I was scheduled for a crown lengthening procedure in two months to be followed by the crown placement. I was wondering if the sore red gum is a sign of infection. Please advice! Thanks so much.

I am not sure why you have the inflamed gums. Have your teeth been cleaned in a while? Is the filling rough under the gumline? An x-ray would tell. Make sure the gums are back to normal before a crown is done. A suggestion is with your dentist's help, applying hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine under the gums via an irrigation syringe.
