Should I let the dentist replace my old fillings?

Hi everyone:-)

I recently visited a new dentist who advised me of replacing my four old silver fillings with white ones. Two of them are located on my back upper teeth and the other two are at my back lower teeth. Any advice as to whether I should let the dentist replace the fillings? The fillings are not bothering me in anyway. Many thanks!

Hello,

Do not replace your silver fillings unless they are leaking, cracked or decayed. When a filling is removed, a good tooth structure is also removed or lost during the preparation for a new filling. You should only replace existing fillings if there is something wrong with them.

Have fillings only replaced when they are failing. It is very unlikely that all four fillings are wearing out at the same time.

In order of durability on back teeth, gold fillings can last a lifetime, silver amalgam fillings 20 to 40 years, and composite resin fillings only about 12 years. There is NO EVIDENCE that silver amalgam fillings are dangerous to your health.
