Root canal or no

I recently went to the dentist. I got a crown and three fillings. Since then my mouth has been in pain. One tooth has gotten sensitive to hot or cold. It was fine most of the day and as I went to bed it started throbbing. It woke me up. Mi took 800 mil of Motrin and put some topical numbing ointment on it. The dentist said the nerve is very irritated and give it three weeks to see how it goes.

What can I use to calm this nerve and how long?

Probably it's a lost cause if this painful. It is important to figure out which tooth is causing the pain. The dentist can put some penetrating sealant over the margins of the tooth that hurts. It is a long shot that it will work. If it doesn't a root canal will be necessary. I think 3 weeks is too long to wait.
