Root canal after crown

Hello there!

I cracked a back molar and the dentist ground it down and put a crown on. After a week, this tooth started giving me problems. It has been sensitive. I switched to a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and that has calmed things down for a while. Now, I've got swelling and pain. The dentist said I need a root canal. What went wrong? Shouldn't a root canal be performed first before putting a crown? I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation. Did you pay for the new crown that was put in after the root canal? Many thanks!

Hi Bubblegum!

You can have the root canal treatment done through the crown. The dentist will make an access opening through the biting surface, cleans it out and repairs the hole in the crown with filling.

The need of a root canal treatment after getting a crown put in does happen. During your first visit, it is possible that your tooth was asymptomatic so only a crown is required. Then, the tooth's nerve tissue was compromised and has caused the tooth to become symtomatic now, that is why you are having pain and the dentist requires a root canal therapy.
