Retainer on my bottom front teeth

Hi, I had braces as a kid and when they were removed the orthodontist left a small, metal wire retainer on the back of my front bottom teeth. This was over 20 years ago. I would like to get the wire removed by a dentist, but am wondering if you think my teeth will move and become crooked again if it's removed? Thanks!

Hello jennierm!

I would get a synthetic night-brace made. As soon as the retainer is off, wear the nightly braces for a while; Initially every night, then every second night, after a while every third and so on..

As long as you feel no tension and pressure when wearing the braces you can rest assured that the teeth are not drifting back.

If you do feel the pull when donning the brace, then you know you have to wear it again with the same regularity as mentioned above.

All the best!

Hello,

If you take your retainer off, it is possible that your teeth will shift back. Get a retainer to sleep in at night if you want to remove your fixed retainer now.
