Receding gums

Dear Doctor,

Lately, I began to notice that my gums have been receding. I thought I have a gum disease and I feel like I need a deep teeth cleaning. I consulted my dentist about this and he said it was due to my crooked teeth and that I need braces. I am not so convinced with what my dentist said because sometimes my gum hurts and when I floss it bleeds and it hurts, too. Do I need to seek for a second opinion? Please advise me about this.

Thank you very much for your answers!

Hello firedrill!

Due to your irregular tooth alignment it could result in a case of periodontitis. Due to the periodontitis you could suffer from a recession of the gums. It would be wise to treat the periodontitis, but also - as your dentist says - to treat the teeth misalignment.

All the best!
