Hi I know its hard when you cannot see a xray but I was told by my dentist that I have a hurt ligament and the tooth is not infected. I swallowed my permamant crown and need to replace it when the doctor put the temporary on the tooth was tender . I wanted to get another opinion . When I saw a endodontist the endodontist said the tooth is inflamed and the nerve is high on the tooth and the nerve is inflamed and wants to do a root canal The pain has got a little better over time but its been a few weeks and the tooth is not 100 percent. But i am leary on a root canal because its not infected but the endodontist said eventually it will become infected since the nerve is inflamed . Its not throbbing pain it only hurts when there is pressure on the tooth. I can have hot and cold liquids . I was wondering do you think I should give the tooth time because I am not sure who is right . Can they tell from a xray if a ligament is inflamed ? I am not sure who to listen to .

The nerve is going through a transition of being inflamed, to being necrotic and abscessed. Along the way you get no symptoms, or intermittant symptoms.

The endodontist is probably right, but if you want to be safe, you can do one of either two things:

1. Preferably, have the dentist make a really nice temporary, which he will have to charge you for. Wear it for a couple of months. If you have no symptoms, you could proceed with the final crown without a root canal.
2. Fabricate a new crown and have it cemented TEMPORARILY. If you need a root canal, it can be removed, the root canal done, and then permanently cement it.

Unless the gums are bleeding a lot, I really do not think it is a matter of inflamed periodontal ligaments. Placing a nicely-contoured temporary crown will also rule out this possibility.

I agree to above saying, but ensure that proper precaution is taken by your dentist to undergo the treatment.
