Problem with wisdom tooth stitches

I have a wisdom tooth extracted four days ago. Things went very smoothly under anesthesia. After the procedure, things haven't been too bad aside from some normal swelling and mild pain. My only problem now are the stitches. They are sticking out and are now irritating my gum. It is painful and annoying.

At night, I would bite the stitches and I would wake up with excruciating pain. (I tend to bite hard while I sleep). I have been sleepless since I had the tooth extracted. I was told the stitches will dissolve on their own but can I ask the dentist to remove them for me? What's the disadvantage if I have this done? Would it interrupt the healing process? Please someone advise me what to do. Thanks for any help.

Depending on material used, dissolvable stitches usually dissolves in 3-7 days which allow normal time to heal the tissue around your extraction site. If you already have waited for that much time, then probably you can talk to your dentist to take out those stitches. If not enough time has been spent, then probably your dentist can take out just part of stitch that hurting you. Many times as healing progress --- inflammation goes away---- gums shrinks around that area--- and so sutures becomes loose and tend to start irritating.
