Post Tooth Extraction

Hello. I had tooth #29 extracted on 11/29. I'd gotten a fistula on the gum and this tooth had a root canal 8 years prior. After the endodontist drilled etc... for a good long time, he discovered that the tooth was cracked and could not be saved so it was pulled. I've had an eventful healing experience so far. No swelling. Bleeding stopped pretty quickly after the extraction. No real pain to speak of, but I've stayed on ibuprofen. No straws. Have been eating soft foods. Nothing extremely hot. No spitting. I've rinsed with salt water, but I don't spit. Just let it run out of my mouth. I smoke and I've tried not to, but I'm having a hard time. The times I've done it, I've wet a little gauze and covered the area and sort of sucked on the other side of my mouth, but very little and just enough to keep me from going crazy. I know it's awful.

What I want to know is what is the site supposed to look like. I've been watching it trying to make sure I don't damage the clot, though that wasn't explained to me. I was just told soft foods, no straw and no smoking for two days. Today is Saturday, so I guess I'm on day 3 from Thursday. I have a picture of the site.

A socket bone graft is done in preparation for a future dental implant. It involves placing bone graft material into the tooth socket and covering it with a membrane to protect the graft while it heals. However, this is generally done at the time of the tooth extraction, but can be done later after the socket completely heals. If you're considering replacing the tooth with a dental implant, it looks like you might benefit from a bone graft, but certainly you should not smoke after a bone graft; it can lead to failure of the bone graft. Good luck!
