Post on a crown- necessary or not?

Hello,

I had a root canal done on tooth #19 two years ago. The tooth cracked and the dentist said it needed to be crowned but he would place a post first before putting the crown on. Is this necessary? Thanks.

A post can be done, but for first molars, a bonded amalgam buildup is just as sturdy, and costs a little less. Without a post or buildup, the crown with tooth can crack off even with the gum.
