Pain With A Nightguard

User Level:
Patient
Posted by: dianals  (5 years ago)
I received a nightguard from my dentist, 9 days ago (it was custom made)for TMJ. The first few days were fine. Wednesday I felt some irritation in the gums, akin to the irritation felt when wearing braces, and they are tightened. I had an appointment for an adjustment on Thursday, and mentioned that pain and was told it was common, and that it should go away after that adjustment.

Friday, it was still there, but not as much, so I carried on. Today, Saturday, I woke up and my cheek (same side) is a bit swollen and tender. The swelling starts just above my nostril (right next to my nose) and extends down to the corner of my mouth. It's not severe, and is not visible to anyone else. But I can feel it, and I can see it if I do a close comparison to the other side.

Of course, my dentist is closed today, and I'm not sure this is worthy of calling the emergency line. But, is this normal, and what can I do to fix it? I will be calling the office first thing Monday morning, but wanted some ideas before that. Thank you very much!

Boy, I have never heard of such symptoms with a TMJ splint and wonder if something unrelated just happened to go wrong at the same time. Could be a lateral incisor or canine just happened to abscess about the same time. It is hard for me to believe the TMJ caused swelling and tenderness.
