Pain week after temporary cap, no root canal yet

Two weeks ago, my 2nd from back, bottom right molar broke. The inside half came off. The tooth had been filled prev. There was no pain. The dentist ground it off and put temp cap on one week ago today. The first two days there wasn't much pain. About the third day, the pain started and has continued to get worse. Advil usually works well for my tooth pain but I'm eating them like candy and it isn't helping. Also, rinsed mouth with warm salt water and that seemed to help for a while but even that isn't doing any good now. Pain level is going from 6 to 8 on 1-10 scale. Like I said, it has been 7 days. Should I continue to wait, thinking it will get better? This happened the same way before and I had to get a root canal after a round of antibiotics to get rid of infection. The dentist said I wouldn't need root canal this time but scheduled appointment for permanent cap for 4 weeks out just in case. I tolerate pain pretty well but this is getting worse.

Quite possibly your dentist was wrong, and you will indeed need a root canal. Nothing will relieve the pain until a root canal is started.
