Pain five days after a tooth extraction, is this normal?

Good day Checkdent!

My upper wisdom tooth was extracted five days ago and until now I am still very much in pain. I called my dentist and he advised me to continue with the antibiotic for some more days. He thought the extraction site got infected. I can also feel pain on the side of my face up to my ear. Is this normal? Why does it take so long to heal?

Please advice! Thanks a lot!

Dear dentnurse!

The first three days following a wisdom tooth extraction are the worst. You may experience slight fever, huge swelling of the extraction site, and even difficulties opening your mouth.

As long as these symptoms persist I would continue with the antibiotics; if you find the symptoms getting worse, see your doctor immediately.

All the best!

Thank you for your answer Doc. I am well now. I just continued with the antibiotics which cleared up the infection and everything went well.
