Pain after onlay and root canal

Five months ago, my filling which I had for 25 years, had been removed. They gave me an onlay. Since then, the tooth had been hurting. The dentist sent me to an endodontist who performed a root canal treatment through the onlay. After this, I went back to my regular dentist to have the hole filled. Now the tooth is still painful particularly to biting down. The dentist said we‘d give some time for the tooth to become stable. If it still gives me any problems, then the tooth has to go. Is this right? Has anyone had experienced this with onlay? I would be grateful for your responses. Many thanks.

The problem with doing a root canal on a new crown or onlay is we cannot reduce the top of the tooth so it doesn't touch after the root canal. So every time you close down, it hits the opposite tooth. Teeth like this take longer to heal. I would not extract until you waited one month.
