Pain after a partial root canal

Hi Doc!

I had an awful pain on one of my upper right back teeth. I went to a new dentist, he took X-ray and told me he couldn't see anything wrong with my teeth. He said, it could be a sinus infection. I took some pain medicines and the pain went away. After two weeks, the pain came back. I went back to the dentist. He again took x-rays and said I had an abscessed tooth. My options are to have it pulled or get a root canal treatment.

I opted for the root canal treatment and on that day, he performed a partial root canal to relieve the pain. A few hours after I reached home, I was in horrible pain. My face was very swollen. I called the dentist, he said I should take the antibiotics and the pain medication he has given. I waited for a few hours for the medicines to kick in but they didn't. The pain was unbearable. Can I go back to dentist to finish the root canal treatment? I am thinking that through this, the pain will be lessened. I was also wondering why he didn't see the abscess on the first x-ray that he took. Any ideas? Please help me! Any advice would be appreciated.
