Old fillings removal

Hi everyone!

When I was younger I had a few cavities in the back of my mouth filled in with silver. A couple of months ago, my dentist had removed two of the silver fillings. He said they were cracking. After the removal, I had nothing but problems. I ended up with a root canal and a lot of sensitivity. He said I still have one more filling which needs to be removed but I already declined. The tooth he is referring to feels fine and I decided to have the filling removed only if it will start to bother me again. What are your thoughts about this? Is it okay to wait?

Please shed some light on this for me. I would be grateful for your answers!

Dear Go2chicago,

If the existing fills are deep, a root canal maybe required. I also have amalgam fillings which I planned to change with white composites but after knowing from my dentist that composite fillings require more work to be done and they are more fragile compared to the silver ones, I decided to just leave them alone.

Hello!

It is normal to have pain for up to a week after replacing a filling. Painkillers should help in this cases. I think it is better to follow your dentist's advice about the other filling. Have it treated now before it will become worse.
