Night guard causing very sore inner lips

User Level:
Patient

Hi! I have a custom made night guard (upper only) - which I've used for about 6 months total. For the last month or so, every time I wear it I get a very sore and reddened "line" on my upper lip which is preventing me from using it. But I wake up with terrible headaches and a sore jaw if I don't. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

It is rare, but you may have an allergy to the acrylic. A patch test could be done to find out. I have made a mouthguard out of chrome-cobalt for such a patient, but other materials like nylon could be used.
