My tooth split in half, do I need a root canal?

Dear Doctor,

I have a tooth which was cracked down in the middle. I had it checked by my dentist but he was not sure then if I need a root canal on it or not. He drilled it and he put some white stuff in there. After a few months, the tooth split in
half. How can this be repaired? Do I need a root canal?

Your answers are greatly appreciated!

Hello jadepearl!

As long as the dental nerve – the pulpa – is not split open, one can try and save the tooth without performing a root canal.

If the dentine wound is already very big and/or too close to the dental nerve, then usually a special type of cement is applied on the dentine to prevent irritation to the pulpa. I assume this is what that "white stuff" was.

I recommend you visit an endodontist, s/he will be able to advise you further.

All the best!
