My retainer is breaking

Hello:-)

My braces were removed 6 weeks ago and I received clear plastic retainers for the top and bottom. I have been taking good care of it. I clean it regularly and I always make sure it is in the case if I am not using it. However for no apparent reason, it is already breaking. Little pieces of the plastic are wearing away and breaking off piece by piece. It is getting little cracks in it. What is going on? I was wondering if there is a way I can do to avoid this from happening again. I am planning to go the orthodontist and get a new retainer.

Thanks so much in advance!

Dear,
I can understand your problem as i personally had the same problem! Wear off and cracking of retainers are not unusual. Force when we bite down is quite high than we think and sometimes clear retainer does not withstand that force. You made the right decision of going back to orthodontist to get new retainer. Furthermore, there are also different kinds of retainers, your orthodontist might have already discussed about it. other type of retainers can be:
-passive wire on the outer surface of teeth along with braces-- not esthetic though as like clear retainer
- wire on inner surface of teeth-- esthetic, but not suitable for all the cases
- acrylic plate-- not all appliance are esthetic, some people also mention them as little uncomfortable

Hope this info will help you!
Thanks!

Things break after awhile, and that includes retainers. No other solution than to get new one on the top. Guys these days are doing fixed bonded retainers on the bottom. That is what I do for all of my patients.
