My jaw hurts, what will I do?

Dear Checkdent,

Great website you have here!

The jaw near my ear hurt so bad when I touch it, move my mouth, yawn, talk or eat. The inside of my ear is also painful. My mom said it could be due to a wisdom tooth. But I could not see any tooth coming through. There is no pain inside my mouth at all. Is the pain possibly caused by a wisdom tooth? What can I do to ease the pain? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ricky,

It's likely a wisdom teeth. Since the teeth haven't come through yet, they could still be abscessed which is causing
the pain. Put an ice on it. Rinse with mouthwash or salt water to remove food particles which can make the pain worse. I hope I helped.

It sounds like you have a TMJ problem if there is no pain inside of your mouth. You should see a dentist and check the website.

It can be a wisdom tooth overcrowding your jaw. I would have it checked by the dentist right away to be sure though.

Hi ricky!

Your mom is right; it could be a wisdom tooth, however, it could also be an inflammation of the middle ear.

Ideally you should visit a dentist and an ENT (ear-throat-nose) specialist; they will be able to advise you further!

Thanks for everyone's answers. I did see my dentist today. It is a wisdom tooth erupting.
