Mouth sore, swelled gums and mild pain after filling

Hi Checkdent!

I've had a cavity that was filled by an emergency dentist three months ago. After a few weeks, I was still having discomfort on this tooth so I went to my regular dentist. He said the work was not properly done. He saw a decay trapped under the filling. He cleaned it out and did the filling again. A week after, I had bad mouth sores on the left side of my mouth. I always feel like there is a food trapped on the filled tooth. There is a mild pain which goes on and off. My gums swelled a bit. Is there a problem with the filling again? Should I see the dentist now or should I wait for my mouth to adjust with the filling? Please advise!

Thanks a lot!

Hello diana23!

The emergency dentist, as the name suggests, will usually only provide an “emergency” filling – these should be replaced sooner rather than later.

Since that has happened, we now need to determine whether your dental problems are coming from the new filling (due to misalignment or it being non-watertight/leaky), or if it is a periodontal issue, unconnected to the filling itself.

Best would be if you have a bite wing produced; this will be able to shed more light on whether the filling is correct, and also if there are any periodontal issues in the area.

All the best!

Thank you Doc for your reply.

I already booked an appointment with my dentist. This mouth problem is actually very embarrassing. I guess I got the mouth sores from stress. Thanks again.
