Jaw locked shut

Last week, I woke up in the middle of the night due to a severe toothache. I took some Ibuprofen and went back to bed. When I woke up, the tooth ache had subsided but I got pain in my ear and jaw and my lymph nodes were swollen. After about two days, I can't open my mouth as the swelling has forced my jaw shut. The dentist said I have an abscessed tooth. He referred me to an oral surgeon for extraction. The oral surgeon told me to give it a few more days until I can open my mouth normally again. He put me on a 5-day course of Metronidazole. I have been taking it for three days now but I can't see any improvements and I am beginning to get worried. What can I do? Can anyone recommend any way to train my jaw to open? It hurt so bad to try to open it past about 1/4 inch. I can't eat because I can't fit any food in my mouth. It's really painful. I would be grateful for any help you can give me.

Dear gophilsgo, it sounds like you have an acute inflammation from a dental abscess. The antibiotics will help your body combat the infection and it will take some time. Finish the course of the prescription and your swellings and inability to open your mouth will subside. Try your best to consume some food such as yogurt or soups to help your body fight. I hope you feel better soon. Which tooth is scheduled for extraction?
