Is tooth removal always necessary if there is an abscess?

Hello everyone!

I've had a really bad toothache two days ago and it made my face swell a bit. I went to the dentist today and I was told my tooth was abscessed and it has to be removed. He put me on a 7-day course of antibiotics and will extract the tooth on my next appointment. What I want to know is, is it absolutely necessary to have a tooth removed if there is an abscess? I don't really want to lose this tooth (second premolar). Please let me know if I have any other options.

Thank you very much!

The dentist usually do a root canal first. Was it too far decayed to be saved? Inform your dentist that you want to save the tooth.

Thanks for your reply. The dentist did not really explain why the tooth has to go. I will go to another dentist for a second opinion.
