Is this an abscessed tooth?

Dear Checkdent,

I have been having problems with one of my teeth for the last 6 months. I went to the dentist and she told me that one of my teeth was sore because I grind my teeth. A few months ago, I noticed a small bump on my upper gum line but I did not mind it all. Now, I am feeling pain in my tooth more often. It usually occurs when I drink something cold or occasionally when I wake up in the morning. I have a dentist appointment in a few weeks but I would definitely want a professional opinion sooner than that. Is this an abscessed tooth? What will I do to ease the pain while waiting for my appointment?

Thank you and best regards!

Hello platelets!

It could be that your dental nerve has been damaged. With a cold test (watch the video entitled "Cold Test") and an X-ray, one can easily determine whether the nerve is still intact.

If the dental nerve is damaged it can lead to a bone inflammation around the root tip - a "bump" being one of the possible consequences.

Ideally you should visit a dentist right away!

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth caused by a severe tooth decay. Visit your dentist. He will be able to diagnose it by probing your teeth with a dental instrument.
