Infection keeps coming back

Hi everyone,

Five months ago, I developed a fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. I went to the doctor and after a thorough examination, strep throat and mono were ruled out. He put me on amoxicillin three times a day for ten days. I became fine for a few months until two months ago, I again had the same symptoms. I went back to the doctor and he asked me to see a dentist. He thought my symptoms might be due to dental problems.

I went in to see a dentist who told me my top left second molar was infected. He put me on antibiotics for a week. I felt fine then. However, for the past few weeks, I’m having headaches and jaw pain. I also noticed salty taste in my mouth.

Is this an infection coming back? Should I be put on a stronger dose of antibiotics to clear the infection completely? Please help! I am really afraid of root canal and I am hoping I am not due for it. Thank you in advance for your responses.

You do not cure dental infections with antibiotics. You only mask the symptoms for a while. You were supposed to come back and get treatment for the second molar, remember? Why didn't you?

Thank you for your reply Dr. Henry. That was my mistake, I did not go back to the dentist because I thought I was already fine as the pain went away while I was on antibiotics.
