Infection and gum swelling

I am hoping for some advice. I have an infection above an implant or a post with a crown on it. Severe pain that started two days ago. I went to the dentist today and he gaveme an antibiotic and Vicodin for pain. Said I would have to see an oral surgeon to have it cleaned. I have a few concerns. First, the first dose of Vicodin did not help so I waited 3 hours through the pain and took another one. That helped mildly so now the pain is somewhere at 8 instead of a 10. And the gum above the tooth has started to swell. Feels like I have a cotton ball in there. Is that a cause for alarm? Second, I made an appt with the oral surgeon but the earliest one is 3 weeks away. Should I try to get someone else, may in flare up again earlier? Third, how long will the penicillin take effect? I just took. Y second dose for today so I just started the meds. Thank you to all who can help.
