Infection after a root canal treatment

Greetings!

Last month, I had an intermittent pain and sensitivity on my upper first premolar. The dentist performed a root canal on this tooth. Three weeks after the root canal procedure, the gum above the root canal treated tooth became sore and tender. The dentist said, I developed an infection and he prescribed antibiotics. I already finished the course of antibiotics but my gum is still a little bit swollen and there is still a minor pain and sensitivity on the tooth. Should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance for any information or advice!

Hello Dongnuts!

Pain or some discomfort after a root canal treatment usually occurs when there was an infection before the surgery that was not reached during the treatment. Have your dentist or the specialist who did the root canal evaluate your condition.

Dear Dongnuts,

Pieces of infected or inflamed pulp might have been left near the bottom. In this case, the root canal treatment will have to be repeated.
