I am having a jaw pain, is this TMJ?

Lately, I've been experiencing jaw pain on the left side of my mouth. It hurts more when I bite
down or when I open my mouth, too wide. The pain runs up to my left ear. Has anyone ever experienced this? Could this be TMJ? Please help!

Hello Atomicbomb,

I was diagnosed with TMJ three years ago. My jaw would pop and I felt very uncomfortable, after a few months, my jaw started getting locked. They said the pain caused by TMJ varies. I suggest you see an oral surgeon who specializes in TMJ problems.

Hello atomicbomb!

If the pain only occurs with certain jaw positions that are physiologically unnatural, I would let it be.

What do I mean? Many patients will say “look, when I do THIS it hurts..” and by THIS they twist their jaws so brutally it hurts to even watch!

This kind of jaw related pain usually occurs due to forced movements with the jaw; if this is the case, let it be and don’t think about the pain, and it eventually it won’t be a problem anymore!

All the best!

Hi Atomicbomb,

It is possible that you have a grinding habit at night. I tend to clench my teeth at night which gives me terrible jaw pain in the morning. It makes eating and speaking painful.
