How to tell if a tooth is cracked?

Hello Doc!

I had a large filling replaced on my lower tooth a couple of months ago. Recently, I began experiencing a sharp pain when I bite down on this tooth. The tooth beside it has a thin crack line all the way to the gum. I couldn't see it in the mirror but I can feel it with my tongue. How can you tell if your tooth is cracked? How can a cracked tooth be fixed?

Thanks for any advice you can give me. :)

Hello lovemydentist!

I wouldn’t play around and experiment on the tooth; you should visit the dentist as soon as possible!

Sounds to me like a possible tooth fracture; this can be treated with an inlay, a dental crown, or you may even have to undergo root treatment and a possible post build-up.

As you can see, via the web it is difficult to reach an optimal diagnosis – hence, off to the dentist you go!

All the best!
Liebe Grüße JB

Thanks a lot! It's good to know I have a lot of options. I do not want to lose this tooth.
