Hello Checkdent,

Last year, one of my teeth that had a filling fall out and my dentist said it needs a root canal treatment. Part of the tooth has chipped off. Due to financial problem, I did not set an appointment for the root canal. After a month, the tooth and the jaw line have started to become painful. I was given antibiotic and pain killer for the infection and pain respectively. After another month, it became more painful, the pain killers are not of much help anymore. My questions is, how long before the abscess gets serious? Do I need to take antibiotic continuously until I have enough money for the root canal? Please help! I am very much worried that it may lead to complications but I am really broke for now.:-( Thank you very much in advance for your professional advices.

Dear westhans!

Instead of swallowing too many antibiotics, it is better to have the tooth extracted.

In serious cases, an abscess has the potential to be fatal – you should talk to your dentist; perhaps you can pay in installments!
