How long do you need to wear you retainers?

Good day to all!

When I was a teen, I wore braces for years. I am now 45 years old and my teeth have gone back to being crooked. My dentist said, it might be due to inadequate use of retainer after getting my braces off. I wish I had worn it out for many years. My teeth should have not gone back to how they were. Now my grand daughter is due to take her braces off in a few weeks and will have her retainer soon. How long should she wear her retainer? Does she have to wear it 24/7?

Please help! I don't want her to regret like I do now.

Thank you very much!

Hello there!

When I first had my retainer, I wore it day and night for a year. Now my orthodontist said I can only wear it at night. She should follow her orthodontist's advice on how often she should wear it to get the best result.

My dentist said, I should wear my retainers for life during the night. The teeth especially for women will move around so it would be best to keep wearing the retainer to keep your teeth straight after braces.

I had to wear them 24/7 for a year. After that, I decided to wear them at night for life to maintain the alignment of my teeth. This was advised by my orthodontist.
