Hello,

i had root canal 3 days ago because of a minor tooth infection ... and i am on metronidazole antibiotics.. i obviously expected swelling but my jaw is still a little bit swollen...

i have no problem open closing my mouth, it doesnt hurt no foul odour, not sensitive to bite or to tap with objects... it is just bruising and trauma from the RTC .. if so how long can the swelling last and why is my chin numb ?

Typically there is a low grade inflammatory reaction after root canals. This is what your symptoms sound like. It is worse on molar teeth than front teeth. Things are typically pretty much back to normal within a week.

The chin can go numb for several reasons:

1. Infection/inflammation puts pressure on the mandibular nerve.
2. A root canal file went long and touched the nerve. (Very rare.)
3. There was a nerve strike when you were given the anesthetic injections. Patients typically feel something akin to a large electric shock when they are injected.

All you can do is wait. Almost always the numbness goes away.

Just wait for few days. May be there was a nerve strike during anesthetic injections. As you said you are on metronidazole antibiotics, so it will be fine after few days.

I can sure understand your condition as I myself under went the same procedure a few days back, though i did not face any such problem.I can assure you that as you are on metronidaxole antibiotic you would be fine in less than a week.Goods luck.

Hello,
Generally root canal treatment is very painful. It takes time to recover. Wait for some day and if there is no improvement then consult your dentist for any solution. As health comes first. Don't compromise with it.
